The Best Science Toys for Brilliant Young Minds

Amazing Kids' Science Toys in 2015

Choosing science toys for kids is, as I have discovered, the equivalent of attempting to find the long-lost needle in the haystack. Only the haystack has billions of needles, all of them special, and you are searching for a specific three. Weird way of saying it, I know. However, thanks to lots of research and hands-on experience with some of the best science toys in 2015, I can declare the search over.

The following three picks among this year's best science toys are the best for brilliant young minds. Each one is unique and mesmerizing in their own right. Some require experiments and puzzle-solving skills, some encourage a thriving interest and love for nature, and others are just soothing to gaze upon.

Uncle Milton Star Theatre Pro

Call me biased on this one, but I am head over heels in gaga love with all of the astronomy toys from Uncle Milton. Actually, when I think of toys, I think of building bricks and Hot Wheels cars.

The Star Theatre Pro is more of a peacekeeper, insomnia-breaker, and amazing, fascinating gizmo all rolled into one.

Here is what you do. Sit in a dark room and turn on the projector. Tens of thousands of stars, planets, and moons will spring to life on the walls around you. Plus, a neat-o Planetarium soundtrack (optional play, of course) lends to the ultimate indoor stargazing experience.

Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden

We can agree…butterflies are beautiful and important components of nature. There are thousands of varieties, but the Live Butterfly Garden focuses on one – the Monarch. These giant-winged beauties have a trademark orange and black color, and their transformations are the most fascinating of the butterflies.

With the garden, you and your kiddos will receive a voucher for five live caterpillars and their food. The garden is a collapsible, reusable, mesh habitat. Within a few weeks, you can cultivate real, living butterflies, observing them before releasing them back into nature.

Scientific Explorer Disgusting Science

You might not find anything appealing about the disgusting, gross things our bodies can come up with, but your kids probably do. Boogers, intestines, smelly stuff…Yuck! This science kit is disgusting, and it is supposed to be. It delves into the weird, the gross, and the plain attention-grabbing functions, sounds, and fluids that our bodies create.

In four safe, mold-growing petri dishes, kids can learn all about the lifespan of certain bacteria. They can also create their own miniature versions of stinky internal organs, fake blood, and snot-covered slime balls.

Plain gross to us, but fascinating and beautifully disgusting to them.

However, I have stumbled across 3 – a proverbial triple-threat of awesome science-oriented knickknacks that are guaranteed to have your youngsters jumping for joy about their next science experiments and learning projects.

Uncle Milton Moon In My Room

Named appropriately the “moon in my room,” this set brings the beauty of the moon to your home. Instead of heading outside to try to see through the clusters of clouds on a rainy evening, kids can explore the craters of our moon by simply pressing a button. This moon cycles through a dozen phases, and the glow is luminous, realistic, and perfect for use a bedtime nightlight. Truth be told, I have definitely added this to my personal wish list for the holidays!

Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden

A personal favorite – the Butterfly Garden gives children (and kids-at-heart) the opportunity to nurture and nourish baby caterpillars into flourishing, beautiful butterflies. The habitat is made from collapsible mesh, and it can be reused over and over again with numerous caterpillar-to-butterfly projects. There are mail-in order forms that snag kids their caterpillars, and food for those crawly, furry insects are included. They snack over a period of days, grow, cocoon, and morph into lovely butterflies that you can set free in your own backyard.

4M Crystal Mining Kit

Exploring caves and caverns is one of the great wonders of our lifetimes because those underground holes hold so much grandeur and awe-inspiring beauty, especially when it comes to their natural crystals and gems. This set allows science-minded cuties to explore the wonders of caves from the safety of their homes. No spelunking required! Included in each set are 8 crystals and gemstones, encased in crack-open plaster that children have to whittle down with plastic picks. When they have dug through the “dirt” like true archeologists, they can admire their treasures like true geologists.

Pet Tornado @ Amazon

Pet Tornado

Simple and interesting, this brings the shock and awe of a gathering storm to the curious hands of your little weather watcher. An acrylic cylinder has been back dropped with a scenic view for a "we're not in Kansas anymore" feel. Water and soap makes up the ingredients that come together in a "whirlwind" at the middle of the glass whenever it's twirled, thus creating a small tornado.

Earth In My Room @ Amazon

Uncle Milton Earth In My Room

Your kids don't have to be the best with Geography to appreciate the beautiful astral view of our planet. Lit from beneath, the Earth will go in phases of nighttime and daytime, displaying the city lights that would be seen from space. A perfect night-light, this Earth is remote controlled and wonderfully detailed.

Star Explosion Glow In The Dark - Super Nova!

I'm a writer; an imaginative and creative person with the desire to weave daydreams and tales of wonder for passionate people. This also means that my children are treated to new stories every night for bedtime -- some of them involving the stars and myths surrounding certain constellations. The Star Explosion Glow In The Dark has made that an easier task! Originally purchased based on the top 10 science toys rating, my children and I are making memories every evening based on what we see on their ceiling. It's like looking at the clouds and wondering what shapes they make -- except my kids haven't lost their ability to imagine; therefore, the stories we create are outrageous and always full of adventure. All because of a few glow-in-the-dark additives to their bedroom decor.

What is included in the Star Explosion set?

There are 700 pieces in the Star Explosion Glow In The Dark package! It's like having a planetarium delivered to your doorstep; an entire universe purchased for just under $15. There's everything you could imagine when it comes to celestial stickers -- from galaxies with huge loops and spirals, to comets trailing glowing plastic tails.

How does it work?

The planets and stars have special adhesive on their backs, making it easier to secure them to the ceiling or anywhere else. Each time the shapes are exposed to light, the surfaces will recharge so when the lights go out, they'll glow! There's no order to where you have to stick them and no particular design. You and your kids have free reign over what constellations are made and where all the asteroids are headed -- just use your imagination. The Star Explosion Glow In The Dark can be as much a delight to adults as it is for children.
